Haddiscoe Road Improvements

Work is due to start on Tuesday 25th March 2008 to improve the A143 / B1136 junction in Haddiscoe. The works include  utility diversions, kerbing , drainage, haunching and carriageway surfacing. The works will take approximately 6 weeks to complete. The work will be carried out under temporary four way traffic signals , long delays can be expected. However, the B1136 will be closed for a period of 2 days from the 28th April 2008 to allow for the carriageway surfacing to be carried out. When the traffic signals are in operation , advisory signs will be erected warning of long delays and to use alternative routes if possible. During the road closure access will be maintained to properties within the closure. A signed diversion route will be set up as B1136 Loddon Road, A143 Beccles Road, A143 Yarmouth Road, A143 Norwich Road, A146 Norwich Road, B1136 Yarmouth Road, B1136 Loddon Road.   The County Council apologises for any inconvenience this may cause. The work which will cost £ 44358  will be carried out by Norfolk County Council’s Planning and Transportation Partnership* and their contractors.

  1. Tony,
I know I am not the only one in Haddiscoe and surrounding areas who is suspicious of the timing of these road works. It does coincide so conveniently with the proposed gravel extraction consultation, even to the point of vehicles and materials being parked on land owned by the landowner in question. Call me cynical if you like!

  2. I endorse Stephen Farrow’s comments and also comment on the current state of Crab Apple Lane.
Local residents are very unhappy with the continuing poor condition of this lane which is a well used public highway. The local landowners muck heap which adjoins the lane, regularly spills out onto the roadway leaving a foul smelling trail.
The potholes and the retention of water in them is dreadful. not to mention the mud trails and other forms of spillage along this road. Since the start of the current roadworks at the Haddiscoe junction, the conditions on this section of road have become worse. Have the contractors, employed by the Council and using the local landowners property, been asked to respect local residents use of this lane, and to set an example by making an effort to keep Crab Apple Lane free of unnecessary mess?

  3. Tony,

I am aware that the works to the junction relate to highway – ie improvements for vehicular traffic – but will the pedestrian crossing point be improved as part of this work? It is currently situated just off the apex of the bend and adjacent to the junction. It is possible for this to be moved further east so that it is on a straight section of the road and affording reasonable visibility in both directions. This would also be within the Council’s landownership according to the boundary marker posts. Or are the improvements purely relating to safety improvements for vehicular traffic and general repairs?

This crossing point is used by a number of residents who live in the Rectory Road area of the village and wish to walk to the Village Hall and the main part of the village. It is also used by some children who catch college/school buses and by a handful of brave souls who walk from the village to the primary school.

Thank you Simon, I don’t know the answer to your question at present, but I will ask and see what we can do if this has not been considered. I agrree with your comment. Tony

  4. I am told that this work is now completed, I would be pleased to hear from residents who use the road regularly, what they think about the improvements. For my part, I believe that the road markings on the A143 are now incorrect and to turn right from Hadiscoe village one is required to cross a double white line which the Highway Code says is an offence. I have asked the County Council to rectify this but no response yet. Watch this space!
